Avery Brewing FC Moves to 2-0 After 6-5 Win At Rocky Mountain Bighorns

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (December 6th, 2014) Avery Brewing FC won a hard fought game 6-5 Saturday night in front of a packed house at the Colorado Springs Sports Center. The scrappy victory was the Brewers' second game within 24 hours, this time on the road against a very strong and scrappy Rocky Mountain Bighorns team.

Team captain Dan Campbell got the scoring underway 4 minutes into the game.  Kevin Haber drove a long diagonal ball off the far wall which Campbell hit first time past the Bighorns goalkeeper.  With 2 minutes remaining in the quarter the Bighorns got on the scoreboard after a controversial 3-line call.  The goal came after a blocked shot, but the first time finish was excellent.

The Brewers took the lead again in the second quarter thanks to the University of Vermont connection.  Point man Kyle Luetkehans received the ball with his back to goal and flicked a cheeky pass into the path of Justin Geibel.  Geibel took a touch and fired a shot to give Avery Brewing FC a 2-1 advantage.

Ian Marcheschi made it 3-1 after some beautiful buildup.  After keeping possession for an extended period, Ben Donovan zipped a pass across the field to a streaking Sawyer Frank.  Sawyer played the ball to Marcheschi where his first time finish found the back of the net.

Right on the stroke of halftime the Bighorns scored a short-handed goal to send the home crowd into a frenzy.  Halftime score was 3-2 for the Brewers.

Avery Brewing FC came out strong to start the second half.  Dan Campbell scored on a powerplay shortly after the break to make it 4-2, Kevin Haber once again recording the assist.  Defender Tyler Stratford made it 5-2 after winning the ball in his own half and carrying the ball the length of the field and smashing a shot near post past the Bighorns goalkeeper.  The score turned 5-3 after the Bighorns scored on a powerplay of their own with 4:50 to play in the 3rd quarter.

The intensity picked up in the fourth quarter as the Bighorns started pouring on the pressure.  With 9:00 to play a goal was scored off of a rebound to cut the lead to 5-4. Dan Campbell scored what would be the game-winner with 2:30 remaining after his initial shot was blocked.  Campbell's hat-trick earned him Man of the Match.

The Rocky Mountain Bighorns weren't done yet though, and with 0:49 remaining they scored another scrappy goal in front of the net to bring the score to 6-5.  The Brewers remained poised and confident though and closed out the game, not allowing another look at goal for the rest of the game.

Goalkeeper Marc Herzberger had a fantastic game recording 20 saves, many of which were highlight reel quality, and allowing 5 goals.

Dan Campbell scored 3 goals while Kevin Haber assisted 2 of them. Scoring 1 goal each were Ian Marcheschi, Justin Geibel, and Tyler Stratford.  Recording 1 assist each were Kyle Luetkehans and Ben Donovan.

Avery Brewing FC return to action Sunday December 14th before the Winter Break.  Kickoff is 1:30 PM at the Apex Field House in Arvada against Real Colorado Edge.

Avery Brewing FC 5-2 Winners Against Real Colorado Edge

LONGMONT, CO (December 5th, 2014) Avery Brewing FC kicked off the 2014/15 PASL in style by topping Real Colorado Edge 5-2 in front of over 200 fans at Longmont Indoor Soccer.

Man of the match Ben Donovan started the scoring five minutes into the match.  Kyle Luetkehans controlled the ball in the left corner and fired a pass off the boards at the near post where Donovan hit a one-time finish past Real Colorado Edge Goalkeeper Jarod Thomas. With only 2 seconds left in the period it was déjà vu as Donovan scored his second goal with the assist again coming from Kyle Luetkehans off the near post boards.

The pace of the game was much slower than previous Brewers games as Real did a very good job getting men behind the ball and playing solid physical defense.  Sola Abolaji and Mike Miniachi led the way for Real defensively.

In the second quarter after Real were shown a blue card for six fouls, Avery Brewing FC went up 3-0 on a goal from Angelo Rieder, his first for the club.  After having his first shot blocked he fired a left-footed shot from outside the arc low and hard to the far post.  The teams entered halftime at 3-0.

The third period was more of the same as Real once again came out strong defensively and denied space for good looks.  Seconds after hitting the underside of the crossbar, Corey Cullen scored a nice goal cutting in from the left and hammering a low shot with his right foot.  The assist was to Ben Iiames.

Real Colorado Edge came back in the fourth quarter to make it interesting.  They got on the board with 8 minutes remaining to cut the lead to 4-1.  The game seemed to be over as Real were shown a blue card with 5 minutes left, but a short-handed goal from Luke Burgard off of a free kick made the game 4-2 with 4 minutes to play.

The Brewers called a timeout and regrouped though, and Justin Geibel iced the game with a goal off of an assist from goalkeeper Marc Herzberger.

Avery Brewing FC went 2-0 on penalty kills and didn't allow any clear cut chances in the match.

Real Colorado Edge goalkeeper Jarod Thomas played 60 minutes and made 22 saves allowing 5 goals.  Brewers goalkeeper Marc Herzberger played 60 minutes and made 16 saves allowing 2 goals.

The Brewers ended with a 44-23 advantage in shots.

Ben Donovan ended with 2 goals while Kyle Luetkehans provided 2 assists.  Scoring 1 goal each were Angelo Rieder, Corey Cullen, and Justin Geibel.  Recording 1 assist each were Ben Iiames and Marc Herzberger.

Avery Brewing FC plays again tonight, Saturday December 6th down in Colorado Springs against the Rocky Mountain Bighorns.  Kickoff is 7:55 PM at Colorado Springs Sports Center.

The game started off fast as Sterling Copeland scored 30 seconds into the match on an assist from Angelo Rieder.  After a Justin Geibel goal, Martin Orona scored a first-time shot off of a corner kick from Dan Campbell.  Shane Wheeler closed out the scoring in the first quarter with a power play goal off a pass from Kevin Haber to give Avery a 4-0 lead.

Team Captain Dan Campbell scored the goal of the night in the second quarter as he hammered a vicious half-volley into the upper 90.  Corey Cullen laid off a nice pass on a 3-on-2 breakaway to Justin Geibel for his second of the night shortly thereafter.  Goalkeeper Zac Gibbens started a counter-attack with a laser off the boards, which Sterling Copelaand laid across the face of the goal for an Ian Marcheschi tap-in to make it 7-0.  After The Bighorns scored their first goal, Kevin Haber put a left-footed shot into the upper corner to make it 8-1 at the half.

The Brewers gave up a goal to start the second half, however Dan Campbell answered with his second goal of the night.  After a turnover Shane Wheeler and Corey Cullen exchanged two give-and-go's and Shane finished into an open net.  Sterling Copeland got his second goal of the night after an assist from Dan Campbell, a first-time finish off the board at the near post.  Avery Brewing FC scored their 12th and final goal on an own goal, Shane Wheelers pressure resulting in the mistake.

Goalkeepers Zac Gibbens and Alex Seeley combined for the win.  Zac played 3 quarters and made 13 saves while allowing 3 goals.  Rookie goalkeeper Alex Seeley made his Avery Brewing FC debut by making 6 saves in the 4th quarter while allowing 1 goal.

Eleven of the Brewers sixteen players recorded points. Dan Campbell (2G, 2A), Sterling Copeland (2G, 2A), and Shane Wheeler (2G, 2A) led the attack with 4 points each. Meet the team - Shane Wheeler

Next up in "Meet the Team" is our top striker Shane Wheeler. He's a true #9 and has won the Golden Boot every season since joining us in 2012. He's a local lad from Louisville/Monarch HS, grew up playing for FC Boulder (formerly BC Force) and has been a PASL Rocky Mountain Division All-Star with FC Denver in 2012 and Oskar Blues FC in 2013. "Shaner" is a real handful for any defense and we're expecting many more goals and assists this winter. Here's to his continued growth and success on and off the field as he's one of the most genuine and hard-working guys you'll ever meet...and we love him for it.
